Master keying is the process where multiple keys can operate a lock or a group of locks, regardless of the system’s size. For example, in an office building with several locks, a master key can unlock all of them, even if each individual lock uses a different key.
A master key system enhances convenience in settings like office complexes, hotels, schools, universities, warehouses, airports, and hospitals. It streamlines access for janitorial staff, management, maintenance teams, and during emergencies, allowing them to use just one or two keys instead of juggling a large key ring.
In some master key systems, sub-master keys can be created for specific departments within an organisation, adding another layer of convenience. Additionally, for increased security, locks and keys can be designed with restricted keyways, preventing unauthorised duplication of keys.
